Drake Maye is forcing their hand
For the first four games, it is likely that Jacoby Brissett will continue to start at quarterback. However, after publicly declaring Brissett the starter earlier this summer, the Patriots are now viewing Maye and Brissett as competitors because of the impressive play of youngster Drake Maye.
After the club’s preseason game in Washington on Monday night, Mayo stated that he hopes to name the starting quarterback. However, Brissett is still practicing with the first team and appears to be the favorite to start.
The next question is when Maye will take over; if the squad does not perform well in the first four games, they might target Week 5.
Patriots brass actually likes the O-line
The Pats’ offensive line, which has struggled during training camp, was the subject of a startling display of defiance last weekend from top personnel official Eliot Wolf. Wolf vehemently disagreed with their judgment, insisting there was little cause for alarm.
“We’re excited about our offensive line group,” Wolf said. “We’re still working to find the correct combination in there, and I think we have the pieces in place to be able to compete.”
Vederian Lowe, the anticipated starting left tackle who has struggled in both sessions and games, received specific praise from Wolf. Additionally, he gave the impression that the Patriots had little interest in searching the waiver wire or free agency for more offensive line support.
Perhaps Wolf was merely trying to boost the players’ confidence ahead of the season by expressing his belief in a troubled bunch. To this eye, though, it was unexpected how adamant he was that the offensive line would not be a problem.
They’re going to run a lot
Mayo has not evaded it. He has made the team’s season plan very evident. He aims to play excellent defense and try to force the opposition defense to play their defenses for extended periods of time in order to control the game’s flow with long, clock-draining drives that rely heavily on the rushing game.
Based on what he has observed thus far regarding Rhamondre Stevenson’s fit within Alex Van Pelt’s zone rushing system, Mayo is encouraged.
Mayo stated, “I think the run game is going great.” We have excellent backs in our group. I am sure about the room because of (Antonio) Gibson, Rhamondre, and the rest of that group, even though they might not receive the publicity.
Defense needs to iron some things out
The Patriots will rely on a defense they believe has the potential to rank among the league’s top five. To get to that stage, though, it seems like they still need to make some adjustments. Due to the absence of sessions by Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, and Jabrill Peppers, it has been challenging to obtain consistent reps in the secondary. Christian Gonzalez, meanwhile, has had some time to recover from his shoulder injury from last year.
That group is probably not anything to be very concerned about. things is sufficient to work things out.
However, given that the Patriots’ opening game is against Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Tee Higgins, it has not been as sharp as you would desire.
They’ll get creative generating a pass rush
This summer, Christian Barmore’s blood clot diagnosis (which will keep him out indefinitely) and Matthew Judon’s trade to Atlanta for a third-round pick dealt a severe blow to the team’s pass rush.
For DeMarcus Covington, the new defensive coordinator, this means a little more work.
It appears that he will strive to find inventive ways to make up for their loss. He is been experimenting with some unusual blitzes that use several defenders. The preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles saw the defensive line employ a lot of stunts and rotations as well.
They want to take deep shots
Although their roster has not significantly improved, the Patriots, who were last in the NFL last season in explosive plays, are more eager to attempt to push the ball down the field.
With its run-oriented approach, the squad wants to attempt long shots off play action. Brissett and Maye are being urged to focus more on the downfield during sessions.
It has to be seen if those plays will routinely produce favorable outcomes. Nonetheless, it makes up a larger portion of the strategy.
Future is most important thing
This season, success will be determined by factors other than wins and losses for the first time since Tom Brady appeared. By dealing Judon, the Patriots brass made it apparent that their attention is on the future rather than the current campaign.
That makes sense. This roster is in dire need of assistance. Nevertheless, the team’s admission of that through its actions is still significant. Maye’s and a few other young players the Patriots can develop around will be key components of their success this season.
