There is no longer any doubt about Haison Reddick’s future. Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to announce that the Pro Bowl edge rusher was being moved from the Eagles to the Jets.

Schefter reports that in terms of payment, New York will give Philadelphia a conditional third-round pick in 2026. If Reddick participates in at least 67.5% of the defensive snaps this season and records at least 10 sacks, the selection will drop to a second round pick.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, New York will pick up $14.5MM of Reddick’s salary. In the meantime, the Eagles might also avoid forfeiting a $1MM roster bonus that was supposed to be distributed earlier this month but was postponed until April 1. The 29-year-old’s contract expires in 2024, but according to Ian Rapoport, who covers Garafolo’s team, he should sign a new contract after this move.

Reddick has gained notice in the summer when it was reported that the Eagles were prepared to let him go. He was clear that he did not want to be traded, but indications were that a second big Philadelphia deal was not likely. When the Eagles signed former Jet Brett Huff early in the free agency process, it appeared to validate that. This added a well-known sack artist to the mix. Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham are both signed by the team through 2024, but before today, New York was lacking an edge addition.

Huff appeared poised to leave the latter team following a productive season under contract. The Jets were among the teams who expressed interest in signing Jadeveon Clowney, but no agreement was reached. Shortly after Clowney inked a contract with the Panthers, New York decided to go with Reddick. Because of this, the team’s edge contingent will have high expectations going into the 2024 season.

Reddick, who spent his time in Carolina and Philadelphia, has recorded at least 11 sacks in each of the last four seasons. The former first-round pick of the Cardinals proved to be a significant free agent pickup, making the Pro Bowl in both of his seasons with the Eagles. He now has a $15MM annual contract in place, but a new one would undoubtedly pay more toward the top of the market. Reddick will have an advantage in negotiations with his new team thanks to his 27 sacks and 76 pressures during the last two seasons.

Both John Franklin-Myers and Jermaine Johnson, New York’s two most used edge rushers from the previous season, have two more years left on their contracts. While the latter continued to be a reliable secondary performer in that area, the latter had a breakout season with 7.5 sacks last year. Reddick’s addition will help make up for Huff’s departure and provide the team with another talented player to work with.

In order to retain Reddick in the fold for the intermediate term and prevent his possible exit as a free agency the following offseason, it will be intriguing to watch how quickly the Jets pursue a Reddick extension. Now, 12 edge rushers make over $20MM annually, and Reddick may try to get into that group in New York. With Huff out of the picture, the Jets’ front seven will at the very least still feature a potent rotation in 2019.
