OXNARD, California — On Monday, Dak Prescott turned 31. The quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys claimed that wide receiver CeeDee Lamb wished him a happy birthday. Lamb is still refusing to report to training camp in order to get a new deal.
“He just shared with me that he wants to get back and ready to get back,” Prescott said after Friday’s practice. “Hoping that this thing gets done for him. I know I am as well. Hopefully we can get him back sooner than later. I know he’s grinding. I know he’s itching and working. He’s ready to be back with the boys.”
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Friday that talks with Lamb and his agent are “progressing.”
How about the negotiations with Prescott, who is going to enter his last year of employment?
“I would say that we’re talking,” Jones said. “I would not have a legitimate progress point there at all. And I really don’t have it for Lamb, either. And it’s not negative. I’m just thinking it wouldn’t do any good to talk about progress.”
Though Jones stated that one is “not necessarily” closer than the other, it appears that the new agreement with Lamb is closer than the one with Prescott.
“I’ve got a great team,” Prescott said. “I’m confident in getting something done. I’m confident in the front office here. I don’t really think about it, to be honest with you. I’m under contract right now, so all I need to do is be the best that I can be for my job and this year. And then whatever happens, whether it’s in a couple weeks or who knows when it is, if it does happen, it’ll happen. I’m not worried about that.”
Last week, Prescott stated that he felt he owes it to his teammates and other NFL quarterbacks to refuse a deal that pays less than market value.
“I’m a guy that grew up with two older brothers,” he said Friday. “You understand what a brotherhood means, not only for just this team but the fraternity of the NFL and the players. The money is out there and the money can happen. It can be done. There are ways to make everything work for both ways.
“It’s always about pushing the envelope for the next man.”
