Leny Yoro, a summer acquisition for Manchester United, had his foot ailment successfully operated on, the team said on Monday.
After breaking his metatarsal in United’s loss to Arsenal on their preseason tour of the US, the defender will now need three months to recover.
The 18-year-old, who signed a contract for up to €70 million (£60 million) to join from Lille, was substituted by academy graduate Rhys Bennett after being pushed off the field in the first half of the game at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
Later on, scans revealed that the France Under-21 player had broken his left foot’s fifth metatarsal.
Yoro will miss United’s Premier League matches against Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool. However, he might be back in time for Chelsea’s November 2 visit to Old Trafford.
The defensive three of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans was forced off during United’s preseason loss to Liverpool on Sunday, adding to Erik ten Hag’s preseason injury concerns.
The Dutchman’s fitness concerns stem from the 2023–24 season, which saw the side finish last in the Premier League for the first time ever due to an injury issue that at one point prevented six first-team defenders from playing.
In the same preseason match as Yoro, forward Rasmus Hojlund strained his hamstring, forcing him to miss six weeks of action.
On Saturday, August 10, United takes on Manchester City at Wembley in this season’s Community Shield.
August 16 is their home opener against Fulham in the Premier League.
