When the Democratic National Convention revealed that Tony Goldwyn and Kerry Washington would be joining the cast of the week’s nightly Hollywood hosts, it delighted fans of Scandal everywhere.
In Shonda Rhimes’ popular ABC political drama, which ran for seven seasons, the couple portrayed living close to the White House when they starred opposite each other as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer, and President Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant, respectively. However, the actresses have turned into outspoken Democratic Party political campaigners in real life.
In preparation for hosting the last night on which Vice President Kamala Harris would formally receive the Democratic party’s candidacy for the 2024 presidential contest, Goldwyn was scheduled to host the opening night.
It was unclear if a Scandal reunion would occur after three nights apart. However, the former co-stars chose to grant the public what they desire on Wednesday, the third night of the Democratic National Convention, while they were both present in the United Center arena in Chicago, as Washington writes.
The two celebrities exchanged pictures on their Instagram Stories, then Washington posted the pictures on X (see below).
Mindy Kaling and Ana Navarro were also selected to host a night at the four-day event in Chicago, in addition to Washington and Goldwyn. They made appearances throughout the evening and opened the primetime program on their respective occasions.
The Hollywood Reporter has obtained information from Greg Propper, a seasoned social impact advisor to celebrities like Washington who was brought in by the Harris campaign to oversee Hollywood backing. Propper described the strategy the campaign used to get celebrities to endorse Harris. “What we saw happen over the next 48 hours was that many in the entertainment and creative world felt incredibly galvanized by Harris’ campaign,” Propper said, following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he was stepping down from the ticket. However, he was explicit in saying, “This is not going to be a campaign driven by celebrities.” The campaign is going to be focused on the people. The vice president wants to guarantee that everyone is included.
In 2018, Washington began collaborating with Propper and his Los Angeles-based company, Propper Daley. Two years later, she was the host of the 2020 Democratic National Convention’s Zoom night. Regarding her involvement, Washington told THR that it goes beyond candidates and election cycles. “It’s about building a future where everyone understands their voice and their power within our democracy.”
The UnPrisoned star-producer, on the other hand, has been posting on social media about her intense interactions with the public and behind-the-scenes meetings. One such post features actress and filmmaker Ava DuVernay with surprise Hollywood speaker Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday. In anticipation of Thursday’s major event, she posted on Thursday, repeating former first lady Michelle Obama’s DNC stage attack at Harris’ opponent, GOP presidential contender Donald Trump: “Three Black ladies with ‘Black Jobs’ waiting to watch @KamalaHarris come and take her ‘Black Job.”
