During the Thursday news conference to kick off training camp, Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, expressed his views about quarterback Dak Prescott’s future. He stated that he does not believe this will be Prescott’s last season with the team “at all.”
Given how long Jones and Prescott had been dating in Dallas, The Athletic asked Jones if he thought this might be their final season together. Jones made it clear in his speech that he does not believe this will happen.
“I don’t think so,” Jones said. “Just to be very specific. I do not think this will be his last year with the Cowboys, at all. Am I being psychotic relative to my mirror? No, no.
“It’s pretty clear, I think. I want to say if it hasn’t been clear — of how much we appreciate what Dak Prescott has meant to this team in a positive way. The players do play better when he’s out there. He does make his teammates play at a higher level there’s no question about it. So I’m right there in line with his best fan.”
Jones’ plans are thwarted by the fact that Prescott will become an unrestricted free agent following the 2024 season. Therefore, given the terms of Prescott’s current deal, Jones is not the only one with options, as the franchise tag is not available to apply on the quarterback.
For the 2024 season, Prescott is expected to play under a $55.1 million salary cap.
Last year, in his seventh season in Dallas, Prescott placed second in the MVP voting. Throwing for 4,516 yards, he led the NFL in completions (410) and touchdown passes (36). However, the Cowboys have not advanced to the NFC Championship Game since winning the Super Bowl in 1995, and their most heartbreaking playoff loss in a long time came from a wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers last season.
