FOXBORO, Massachusetts — According to numerous reports, a number of teams have gotten in touch with the Patriots to discuss a trade for pass rusher Matthew Judon.
Judon has resumed practice following a brief holdout while he looks for a new deal from the Patriots. Judon missed two days of practice after getting into a heated argument with head coach Jerod Mayo earlier in camp.
The great edge rusher has returned to practice and been fully involved as normal since that altercation with Mayo on the practice field that caused him to miss two sessions. But it does not mean he is happy with his contract.
With 32 sacks in 38 games with the Pats, he has often stated that he feels undervalued and wants a new contract.
It will be interesting to observe how Eliot Wolf, the team’s new front office, handles the team’s dissatisfied leader and how open-minded they are to trade proposals.
On the one hand, they would probably only be getting a Day 3 pick in exchange for Judon because his worth right now is not as great as it would have been in April. However, a rebuilding team’s long-term plans do not usually accommodate 32-year-old pass rushers coming off a season-ending injury, so if the Pats do not intend to extend Judon, it could be prudent to obtain everything they can in exchange for him.
Over the past ten years, Judon has proven to be one of the Patriots’ top free-agent additions.
He signed a four-year contract with the Pats, and he is about to enter the final season. He is not guaranteed any more money. In a press conference last week, he voiced his dissatisfaction and jealousy at seeing the Patriots extend contracts to or re-sign 12 other players but failing to reach an agreement with Judon, who has been their best player for the past three years.
