Tyrell Malacia, a left back for Manchester United, will likely be out for another two months, the manager Erik ten Hag has announced.
The Netherlands international has not participated in United’s preseason tour of the United States. He missed the entire 2023–24 season because of a serious knee injury that needed surgery.
Malacia, 24, has been putting a lot of effort into his fitness regimen and is moving in the right direction, but Ten Hag does not think the left-back will be back anytime soon.
“He is now in a good place, but he is not here because I only took players who could play games or be available for team training,” Ten Hag said. “He is not that far, but he is now in a progress situation.
“At a relatively short notice, he can again return into team training and then into team performance in games. I think it would be possible in two months.”
Malacia last played for United at the close of the 2022–2023 season, when they defeated Fulham 2-1 at home.
Given Luke Shaw’s recent physical concerns, United’s choices at left defender are limited as a result of his prolonged absence. But Harry Amass has made an impression in the preseason.
In an attempt to bolster their defense even more this summer, United made an initial double offer to recruit both Matthias de Ligt and Nassair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, according to a story published by The Athletic on Thursday.
After the plan was turned down, the Bundesliga team informed their Premier League rivals that further negotiations would be necessary in order to come to a deal.
Leny Yoro, who United also acquired from Lille this summer, is anticipated to miss three months of activity following a foot injury he suffered against Arsenal.
