After the break in his show, Seth Meyers spoke on Tim Walz’s selection as the Democratic nominee for vice president on Monday night.
After a three-week hiatus, Late Night with Seth Meyers made a comeback on Monday; The Late Show with Stephen Colbert had been absent for two weeks.
Meyers examined a rapid list of news items he missed during his “A Closer Look” monologue on Monday. These included Joe Biden withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race and Kamala Harris, the current nominee, announcing Walz as her running mate.
Meyers called Republican Party leaders “strange” in response to the recent upsurge in attention given to Democratic criticism of the GOP. Before Harris selected him, Walz made an appearance on Morning Joe, which sparked the trend that swiftly expanded throughout the party. Today, Democratic journalists all throughout the country focus their criticism of Republicans on calling them “strange.” Consequently, a lot of people believe Walz initiated the phenomenon.
Meyers stated on the broadcast on Monday that his favorite of Donald Trump’s answers to the “weird” criticism was when he said, “Nobody’s ever called me weird.”
“I made a whole career out of it,” Meyers said in response. “That was the original title of his show. In fact — that brings us to a new segment called Seth Has a Bone to Pick with Democrats.”
After that, the Late Night program began a montage of all the instances in which Meyers described the Republicans as strange, saying: “Hey, Democrats. I don’t mind you guys calling Republicans weird, but maybe you throw a citation out there next time you do. I don’t want to brag or anything, but we’ve been banging the ‘Republicans are weird’ drum for like five years.”
The montage ended with Walz’ famous Morning Joe interview.
“Tim Walz says it once on TV and he’s the VP nominee,” Meyers said. “Meanwhile, I didn’t even make the short list. Is it because he was a high school football coach and I once caught a football wrong playing flag, and still have a janky knuckle on my right ring finger?”
He went on to show the audience his finger and tell them, fittingly, that it looks “super weird.”
