Coby Mayo was described as “extremely close” to the major leagues by Mike Elias, general manager of the Baltimore Orioles, last month. A major-league source says the club’s most recent brilliant talent will be promoted on Friday and is almost ready to make his debut.
Jordan Westburg’s fractured right hand means that Mayo will be the Orioles’ primary third baseman. After Jackson Holliday, the 22-year-old is the Orioles’ top prospect. He has excelled at Triple-A Norfolk this season, hitting.301 with a.961 OPS in 302 at-bats.
This move is both necessary and a demonstration of the Orioles’ envied depth in the infield, as Westburg’s recovery this season is uncertain.
Mayo, a 2020 fourth-round selection, attracted a lot of attention around the trade deadline this year. According to Keith Law’s most recent top-60 rankings, which The Athletic released two weeks ago, he is the No. 18 prospect in the game.

The Orioles began a four-game series at the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night, the first of which matched them for first place in the American League East with the New York Yankees.
