Trey Lance made his first appearance in two years with the Cowboys, stepping in during the fourth quarter after Cooper Rush was benched in Dallas’ 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
Lance initially entered the game for a brief two-play stint in the third quarter before Rush returned, only to fumble on the following play.
In Lance’s next series, he was sacked on his first play but responded by completing three passes. However, the drive ended when tight end Jake Ferguson fumbled, which Lance helped contain by pushing safety Reed Blankenship out of bounds. On the following possession, Lance was intercepted by C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Lance finished the game with 21 passing yards, completing four of six attempts with an interception, and added 17 rushing yards on three carries. Combined, Rush and Lance managed 66 passing yards in the game.

With Dak Prescott sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Cooper Rush and Trey Lance took over quarterback duties for Dallas following the team’s Week 9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Prescott was placed on injured reserve after he “felt something pull” in his hamstring late in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 27-21 loss to the Falcons, describing the injury as “something I’ve never felt.” Before his injury, the three-time Pro Bowler had recorded 1,978 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions this season.
The Cowboys acquired Lance in a 2023 trade with the San Francisco 49ers, who had originally selected him third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. While Lance had seen some preseason action this year, he hadn’t taken a regular-season snap for Dallas until Sunday. Over his career in San Francisco, Lance played in eight games, passing for 797 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions, along with 235 rushing yards and a touchdown.
